Calorie is defined as a unit of energy equal to the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius.  What this means to us is if we ingest 3500 calories of food we will gain 1 lb of fat.  Conversely, if we burn off 3500 calories we will loose 1 lb. of fat.

It is important to be getting the right amount of calories each day and even more important to be getting the right types of calories.  "Empty calories" are those that do not provide the proper nutrients.  Some common examples loved by millions are: candy, soda, donuts, bacon, and even pizza!  These foods may make our senses go wild, but they also make those waistlines go wild.  As we age our bodies need fewer calories each day.  To loose 1 lb of fat a week we must reduce our total calories by 500 each day.  (3500/7 = 500)  Depending on your size and daily activities, 500 calories can be difficult to eliminate.  This is why it is so important to include both exercise and healthy eating habits into your lifestyle.  By combining both you can reach your goals, not feel deprived and have fun doing it.
